What It Is

The Retinal Eye exam is simple and painless and allows a doctor to see the inside of your eye, including the retina, optic nerve, and blood vessels.

  • Dilating your pupils: Eye drops are used to enlarge your pupils, which allows your doctor to see the back of your eye more clearly.
  • Taking digital images: A high-resolution imaging system takes pictures of the inside of your eye.

A Retinal Eye exam is the best thing you can do for your eye health! Early detection is the key to prevent vision loss.

How Often

Get a Retinal Eye exam every 1 to 2 years if you:

  • Have diabetes
  • Are over age 60
  • Are African American over age 40
  • Have a family history of glaucoma

If you have diabetes or high blood pressure, please check with your eye doctor how often you need an exam.

For a few hours after your dilated eye exam, your vision may be blurry, and you may be sensitive to light.

  • Ask a friend or family member to take you to your appointment
  • Bring your sunglasses
